Direct Flights vs One-Stop Flights: Which Should You Book?

Non-stops save 4–6 hours but often cost 25–40% more. A framework for deciding when the premium is worth paying.

Between Australia and India you can fly non-stop on a small number of routes, or one-stop through hubs like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and Dubai. Which is right depends on who is travelling and when.

The real time difference

A non-stop Melbourne–Delhi runs about 12.5 hours. A good one-stop via Singapore is 16–18 hours door to door. The gap is smaller than people assume — but only when the connection is short. A one-stop with a 7-hour layover becomes a 21-hour journey, and that is a different proposition entirely.

When the non-stop premium is worth it

  • Travelling with young children or elderly parents. One take-off and landing, no midnight terminal transfers. This is usually decisive.
  • Short trips. On a 10-day trip, saving 8–10 hours of total travel across both directions is meaningful.
  • Tight onward connections in India (domestic legs, trains, events).

When one-stop wins

  • Price-sensitive travel. The savings routinely run AUD 300–500 per passenger.
  • Baggage-heavy travel. Gulf and Southeast Asian carriers often include 30–35kg where non-stop fares include less.
  • Comfort breaks. Some travellers genuinely prefer splitting 12+ hours of flying with a 2–3 hour stretch in Changi.

The layover quality rule

Not all one-stops are equal. A 2–3.5 hour connection in a good hub is nearly painless. Under 90 minutes is risky for international-to-international transfers; over 6 hours turns into a lost night. When our AI ranks options, layover quality is weighted almost as heavily as price — because a bad connection is the most common thing travellers regret.
