Students travelling between India and Australia have a different booking problem from holiday-makers: heavy luggage, one-way journeys, uncertain dates, and tight budgets.
Student fares are real — sometimes
Several airlines offer genuine student fares on this corridor, typically bundling 10kg extra baggage and reduced change fees. Availability depends on route and season, and they must usually be booked through an agent rather than the public website. Bring your student ID and offer letter / CoE — airlines can ask for proof at check-in.
Baggage is the deciding factor
Moving your life across the ocean means 30kg minimum for most students, often 40kg+. Compare fares on total checked kilograms, not sticker price: a fare AUD 80 dearer that includes 15kg more baggage is nearly always the better buy, because excess baggage purchased at the airport is brutally expensive.
One-way pricing traps
One-way international fares are often more than half the return price. If you are certain about a return window, a return ticket can be cheaper even if you change the date later and pay a change fee. If your return is genuinely unknown, compare the one-way against a flexible return honestly, including the change-fee rules.
Timing around semesters
The crunch weeks are early February and mid-July (Semester 1 and 2 starts). Fares rise sharply in the final three weeks before O-week. Book 8–12 weeks ahead if you can; if you cannot, mid-week departures still shave a meaningful amount.
Documents to have ready
Valid passport, student visa grant, CoE, and proof of funds if requested. Some carriers check onward-travel or visa documentation at check-in for one-way tickets — have digital and printed copies.
